Calling all amateur competitive eaters! The King of Wing Bowl, Bill Simmons, known to many as El Wingador, is challenging YOU to a pre-Wing Bowl finger lickin’, down ‘n dirty, lip smackin’ wing-eating contest! The legendary five-time Wing Bowl champ is hosting a Pop Up and “Sprint” at SOMO Manayunk on Wednesday, January 31st at 6 p.m. For $20, anyone can put up or shut up and compete against Simmons. Competitors will devour (10) SOMO wings and (10) wings prepared with Simmons’ special “El Wingador Sauce.” Whomever devours their plate of 20 wings first wins an invitation to SOMO’s new South Philly outpost opening event and $200 cash.
“I’m told I’m the greatest eater in the Delaware Valley, and I thought maybe some people would like to challenge me,” laughed Simmons. “I just want to have some fun eating wings with my fans and other chicken enthusiasts, and see if anyone can keep up with me.”
The 55-year-old Simmons is retired from professional competitive eating in order to concentrate on his forthcoming restaurant venture. The ”El Wingador Sauce” will be featured at his new restaurant, which he plans to open in the Philadelphia area this year. “My wing sauce is a sweet, homemade barbeque sauce made with vegetable purée and no butter or oils that packs some nice heat,” said Simmons. SOMO’s wings are adorned with a lemon garlic parmesan glaze.
“You could call it a warm-up to Wing Bowl 2018,” said SOMO’s James Morrissey. “This delicious event is open to the public, but space is limited, so we’re encouraging area wing lovers to sign up and make sure to come hungry.”
